Berghia Nudibranchs: Husbandry & Acclimation
For your Berghia slugs (Berghia stephanieae) to successfully start their work in your saltwater aquarium, proper husbandry and careful acclimatization after transport are crucial. As these are delicate invertebrates, you should follow the steps below precisely.
Water parameters for optimal husbandry:
Berghia slugs are purely marine animals and share the same requirements as your corals. Ideal conditions are:
• Temperature: 24 °C – 26 °C
• Salinity / Density: 34.5 – 35 ‰ (approx. 1.023)
• pH value: 8.1 – 8.4
Step-by-step acclimatization guide:
After your package from our breeding laboratory has arrived, please proceed as follows:
1. Adjust temperature: Place the sealed transport bag or containers unopened in your aquarium (or sump) for about 15 to 20 minutes so that the water temperature slowly equalizes.
2. Drip method (Highly recommended): Carefully pour the transport water, along with the slugs, into a small, clean container. Now, slowly drip aquarium water into the container using a thin air hose (possibly equipped with a stopcock). This entire process should take about 45 to 60 minutes until the water volume has at least doubled. This prevents a density shock for the animals.
3. Introduction: NEVER simply place the slugs in open water or directly in front of powerheads. Turn off the flow and, ideally, the light for a short time. Place the slugs with feeding tongs or a small spoon directly on or very close to an Aiptasia or in a quiet crevice in the reef structure.
Important tips for success:
• Beware of predators: Certain fish (such as some wrasses, filefish, or aggressive blennies) as well as carnivorous shrimp (e.g., Peppermint shrimp) can prey on Berghia slugs. If you have such tankmates, it's best to introduce the slugs at night with the lights off.
• Slugs wander: Don't be surprised if you don't see the slugs for days after introduction. Berghia slugs are nocturnal and live very secretively. They do their work in hidden places.
With this professional preparation, nothing stands in the way of successful and natural Aiptasia control!
